About

A steady hand for a complicated organ

After 10 years across some of the world's leading hospitals in London, Manchester and Cambridge (UK), and further training in the USA, Dr. Mukherjee is now a leading private multi-specialty consultant in Kolkata, working across Critical Care Medicine and Nephrology.

His particular focus is acute and ITU-based multi-organ and kidney failure — cases requiring dialysis, SLED, CRRT and other specialised treatment under close critical-care monitoring. He trained in South India before moving to the UK, and specialises in the emergency and acute end of kidney failure, where early, correct decisions matter most.

Special Interest

Where his practice goes deeper

Three areas define his clinical focus — and the reason patients are referred to him specifically, rather than to nephrology in general.

Conditions Treated

Where patients usually start

Most first visits fall into one of these areas. If you're not sure yours does, bring your latest blood work and it can be sorted out in the first consultation.

Urinary

UTI

Recurrent or complicated urinary tract infections.

Symptom

Frothy Urine

Often an early, easy-to-miss sign of protein leak from the kidney.

Symptom

Swollen Legs / Edema

Fluid retention linked to kidney, heart or liver function.

Critical

Multiorgan Failure

ICU-based care for kidney failure alongside other organ systems.

Chronic

Chronic Kidney Disease

Staging, slowing progression and long-term planning at any stage.

Chronic

Hypertension & the Kidney

Resistant or kidney-related high blood pressure.

Treatment

Dialysis Care

Haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis — starting, adjusting, troubleshooting.

Chronic

Diabetic Nephropathy

Kidney complications of long-standing diabetes, tracked over time.

Procedure

Kidney Stone Disease

Diagnosis and medical management, with referral when needed.

Long-term

Transplant Evaluation & Follow-up

Pre-transplant work-up and long-term recipient care.

When To Come In

Kidneys rarely complain loudly

Kidney disease is often picked up on a routine blood test, well before there are symptoms. These are signs worth acting on sooner rather than later.

If you're already diagnosed with diabetes or high blood pressure, a yearly kidney check is worth doing even without symptoms — both are leading causes of CKD.
  • Swelling in the ankles, feet or around the eyes
  • Foamy or bubbly urine, or a change in how often you urinate
  • Blood pressure that's hard to control on medication
  • Loss of appetite, nausea or a metallic taste
  • Abnormal creatinine or eGFR on a routine blood test

Questions Patients Ask

A few things worth knowing upfront

No. Most CKD is caught at an early stage and managed for years with medication, diet and blood-pressure control. Dialysis is only considered once kidney function has dropped significantly, and it's discussed well in advance — not sprung on a patient.

No referral is required. Many patients come directly after an abnormal blood test or on their own concern; others are referred by a physician or diabetologist.

It depends on the cause and how early it's caught. Acute kidney injury can often be reversed if treated promptly. Chronic kidney disease usually can't be reversed, but its progression can be slowed significantly with the right treatment.

Any blood or urine test reports from the last 3–6 months, current medications (or a photo of the strips), and details of any existing conditions like diabetes or hypertension.

Yes — both haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are discussed as options where medically suitable, based on lifestyle, home support and kidney function.
